Evidence-Based Training Principles
Sourced from NASM, ACE, ISSA, and other evidence-based fitness and wellness programs
Progressive Overload
NASM, ACE, ISSA
Gradually increase weight, reps, or sets each week to continually challenge your muscles and avoid plateaus. This is fundamental to strength development according to ISSA guidelines.
Rest & Recovery
ACE
Muscle growth happens during recovery, not during the workout. Allow 48 hours between training the same muscle group and prioritize 7-9 hours of sleep nightly.
Movement Quality Over Quantity
NASM
Proper form reduces injury risk and ensures the target muscles are working effectively. A lighter weight with perfect form beats heavy weight with poor technique.
Combine Strength & Cardio
ACE
Optimal results come from 2-3 days of resistance training plus 3-5 days of moderate cardio weekly. Both are essential for cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Periodization
ISSA, NASM
Vary your training intensity and volume in cycles (weekly or monthly). This prevents adaptation plateaus and reduces overuse injury risk.
Consistency Over Intensity
ACE, NASM
Showing up regularly with moderate effort beats sporadic intense workouts. Long-term adherence is the strongest predictor of fitness success.
These principles are informed by globally recognized programs including NASM, ACE, ISSA, Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training, and other evidence-based fitness and wellness organizations.
